Others Will See

I’m always amazed at the different ways God can speak to us. One night when I was reading Zuri a bedtime story from her Bible, I was struck by a line in the story of Daniel. The children’s version is succinct so I’ll share:

“Daniel was far from home, but he loved and trusted God. Daniel was friends with the king. Some of the king’s men were jealous. They tricked the king, and Daniel was thrown into a den of lions! But Daniel trusted God, and God kept him safe. ‘Daniel’s God is the one true God!’ said the king.”

Right then through a five sentence summary of a 12 chapter book, God encouraged my Spirit. The last line reminded me that through Daniel’s trial, God’s glory shone so clear and many people came to know God.

“And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound was found on him, because he had trusted in his God…Then King Darius wrote to all the peoples, nations and men of every language throughout the land:

‘I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel. For he is the living God and he endures forever; his kingdom will not be destroyed, his dominion will never end.’” (Daniel 6: 23; 25-26)

In my own life I’m reminded that our perseverance through trials can point others to God. Recently, I feel like I stepped out of the storm cloud that was a long postpartum recovery. When Zuri turned one, I felt like I could breathe again. The challenges of motherhood will remain but I no longer have those nagging dark thoughts nor am I weighed down with anxiety.

Through it all, I wouldn’t change a thing about my journey. Each trial is so fruitful with lessons learned. Trials strengthen us, deepen our faith, and draw us closer to God.

“...We also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.” (Romans 5: 3-5)

Motherhood has undoubtedly drawn me closer to God. Only through His strength can I find the strength and patience for each day. Of course, Zuri’s an angel so that helps too!

I’m hopeful that one day I can help postpartum mothers in a larger way. In the meanwhile, I’ll stay in tune with God and see where He guides my next steps.
